Marguerite Herman: Your Voice for Healthy Families and Strong Public Schools in Senate District 8

My top issue: strong schools

I support full funding of K-12 public schools and community colleges, which are the heart of our children’s success and a strong economy. Wyoming’s founders realized that when they required the Legislature to fund a complete and quality education for all children. I support local control of curriculum and budget by locally elected trustees, while the state does its job of setting standards and accountability.

I spent eight years in a nonpartisan office, as a trustee for Laramie County School District 1, with a focus on duties to schools and children. I resisted distractions of local and national politics and alliances that put other interests first.

Other issues

Healthcare for more Wyomingites: The Legislature should use federal funding to give more low-income Wyoming families access to health care, covered by the state Medicaid program. That would make healthcare available to  an estimated 19,000 who fall into a coverage gap: they earn too much to apply for Medicaid now and they don’t earn enough to get subsidies on the insurance exchange. Access to healthcare is vital for our hard-working families and our economy. That includes support for our state maternal-child health programs, to ensure the healthiest start for our youngest citizens and for whole families.

Elections: I support an election system that is secure and that includes as many eligible voters as possible.

Energy, jobs, wildlife, and land: Balance requires recognizing the importance of all factors: wildlife and open spaces AND energy, industrial and real estate development. All are important to Wyoming and our future. I have a friend, well-respected for her conservation experience and wisdom, who talks about “the Wyoming way” of finding balance by using existing regulations, taking a case-by-case analysis and always building on broad consensus that we value all of those things: development AND wildlife/open spaces. We can identify spaces necessary to conserve wildlife habitat and migration and at the same time acknowledge development essential to take care of our people and accommodate development essential to our economy — all of it within federal and state land laws.
